This sculpture originated from multiple automatic drawings of a human reclining figure. This horizontal representation of death was developed further by sketching and studying the human figure in several postures. Amongst the experiments carried out with different media, clay seemed to offer the ideal qualities, but it was decided not be preserved by firing. As it dries, the piece is thus prone to processes of deterioration and decomposition, just like a human corpse. The figure has not particular identity or age. This ambiguity embodies the inevitability of death, presenting us with an image of death as a necessary stage.
